Things To Know About Airport Cleaner woman Who Returned Lost N12m In 2015

People like Josephine Ugwu are rare, people who are strong enough to return a huge amount of money that was lost. Ugwu became a Nigerian symbol of integrity in 2015, after she returned N12,000,000 back to it's owner.

The woman who was working as a cleaner at Murtala Muhammed International Airport had stumbled upon a pile of cash while she was cleaning the toilet. The honest woman had returned the money by taking it to the security.

As at 2015, the exchange rate was different and the pile of cash Ugwu found was in dollars ($28,000) which is N10,080,000 at the current exchange rate but then it was a total of N12,000,000.

N12,000,000 or N10,000,000, even the lowest amount of money could be difficult to return for anyone especially for one who doesn't have much to live on. Someone like Ugwu who had been earning N7,800 per month.
What Ugwu did was so honourable, that one has to wonder who she is exactly. What makes her tick? Josephine Ugwu is from Obonkpa in Nsukka local government, Enugu state. She is a national diploma graduate of our Saviour Institute of Science in Enugu.

The life of the 39-year-old who had done what she did just because she believed it was the right thing to do changed drastically. She received rewards from several people who were impressed by her honesty.

1. Honourable

It was discovered that Josephine Ugwu is truly someone with integrity. The incident wasn't the first time she returned a huge sum of money back to it's owner. Ugwu had done the same thing on two different occassions, she was said to have returned N600,000 and N2 million in 2014.

2. Salary Increase

The woman had been rewarded by her employers with a salary increase. Her salary had been increased to N15,000 from N7,800, making it a N7,200 increase.

3. Job offer

She had gotten a job offer to work with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria as an employee in it's commercial department. In her words:"I am in the commercial department. We are in charge of flight landing."

4. Rewards

She had also been rewarded by others who were impressed by what she did. It was gathered that the owner of the money had given her N5,000. She also received a reward from Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission.

Ugwu had said: "The owner gave the security men about N15,000. I was given N5,000 out of it. One organization gave me N20,000, I also got a freezer."

5. Mockery

Despite becoming a symbol of integrity and honour to many, some Nigerians mocked her for returning the money. They expressed that someone who was living the way she did shouldn't have returned the money back. Others stated that despite what she did the reward did not equal her effort.

A colleague of hers had said: “Some people have abused her and called her a fool for returning the bag. It now looks as if what she did was wrong. Most people will not be motivated to follow her lead when faced with similar situation. The government should have, at least, sent her a commendation letter for what she did.”

Despite the fact that she was mocked, Ugwu expressed that she prefers to make a good name for herself than become rich.

“So, I am telling every Nigerian to be happy in any situation they find themselves. Don’t be faster than your shadow because so many things will go wrong. Sometimes things get bad because people want to be like others. All fingers are not equal. It is true that God promised those who serve him riches, but people should be careful how they go about it. I am telling people to have patience. It is because people want quick money that is why some people become thieves."

Queen Elizabeth had eye surgery for cataract in May, which explains why she's been wearing sunglasses – Buckingham Palace

Britain’s 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth II underwent eye surgery to remove a cataract in May, Buckingham Palace said today.

“I can confirm that the queen successfully underwent a short, planned procedure to treat a cataract last month,” a palace spokesman said.

In recent weeks the British monarch has been seen wearing sunglasses at a number of events, including the Royal Windsor Horse Show and Buckingham Palace garden parties.

Cataract surgery typically takes just 30 to 45 minutes under local anesthetic, but it can take an individual four to six weeks to fully recover. Although she turned 92 in April, the queen traditionally holds an official birthday on the second Saturday of June to enjoy more favourable weather. Her husband Prince Philip will then celebrate his 97th birthday on Sunday. The palace announced he had undergone successful hip surgery in April after retiring from public life last summer, having attended more than 22,000 engagements and delivered nearly 5,500 speeches over the years.

Israel/Palestine Crisis: Muslims Protest In Abuja And Ibadan

Muslims, in Ibadan, protest ‘wrongful occupation’ of Palestinian land by Israel

By By Saheed Salawu on June 8, 2018
SOME Muslims have staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, against the relocation of the United States embassy to Jerusalem and what they called the continued occupation of Palestinian land by Israel.

The protesters, in their scores, carried banners bearing messages that condemned the development in the Middle East. One of the leaders of the protest, coordinator of Al-Quds Foundation, Rasheed Attah, said despite the non-recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the United Nations, the US still went ahead to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

He said Israel had been occupying Palestinian land unlawfully and committing different atrocities against the country since 1948.

Attah called on all peace-loving people of the world and nations with sympathy for justice and human dignity to not only condemn “this act” but sanction Israel, the US and their allies.

“We hereby call on all peace-loving nations of the world, human right groups, civil liberty organisations and all justice-oriented individuals to tread the path of justice and fair play like South Africa and Turkey by calling back home their ambassadors and stopping sitting on the fence in the face of oppression, domination and state terrorism of Israeli government,” he said.

He said not only Muslims are affected by the atrocities regularly being committed by Israel and its allies but Palestinian Christians are not spared as well.

A bill that prevents a vice-president who completes a president’s tenure from contesting twice signed

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law, a bill that prevents a vice-president who completes a president’s tenure from contesting twice.

Speaking with journalists at Aso Rock on Friday, Ita Enang, senior special assistant on national assembly matters (senate), said the law also applies to a deputy governor who completes the tenure of a governor.

“The effect is that having taken the oath of president once, he can only contest one more time and no more,” Enang said.

“That is the intent of this amendment.”

TheCable understands that the law does not apply to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan as it takes effect from the period it was signed.

Jonathan completed the first term of Umaru Yar’Adua who died on May 5, 2010.

He was also sworn in for another term on May 29, 2011, after he won the presidential poll of that year.

Ita-Enang said Buhari also signed the constitution fourth alteration bill that grants financial autonomy to houses of assembly and state judiciary.

“I just want to inform you that His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari today assented to the constitution fourth alteration Bill which grants financial authonomy and independence to the houses of assembly of the respective states and to the judiciary of the respective states,” he said.

“Therefore upon this signature the amounts standing to the credit of the judiciary are to be now be paid directly to the judiciary of those states, no more through the governors and no more from the governors.

“And then the amounts standing to the credit of the houses of assembly of the respective states are now to be paid directly to the houses of assembly of that state for the benefit of the legislators and the management of the states house of assembly of that state. This grant full autonomy now to the Houses of Assembly and judiciary of states.

“Another act which has come into force today is constitution amendment 21 which relates to the determination of pre-elections matters. It has reduced the date and time of determining pre-election matters to ensure that the pre-election matters in court do not get into the time of the elections and do not lend thereafter. The relevant section of the constitution has also been amended by this act, therefore amending the constitution.

“The other one is bill 16 which is now an act. The intent of that Act is to ensure that where a vice-president succeeds the president and where a deputy governor succeeds a governor, he can no more contest for that office more than one more time. The effect is that having taken the oath of president once, he can only contest one more time and no more. That is the intent of this amendment.”

Enang added that the president also signed a bill that gives the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sufficient time to conduct by-election.

Atiku Expresses Concern over Alleged Plot to Arrest Obasanjo

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said that he was seriously concerned about the alarm raised by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the Buhari administration was planning to arrest him on trumped-up charges.
In a statement issued by the former vice president on Friday, he advised the FG  to avoid aggravating the already overheated polity.

Atiku said he was disturbed by the situation in the country considering the huge price that was paid for the restoration of democracy.

“I wish to advice that government and its agents should retrace their steps to avoid aggravating the already overheated polity.
“The alert by President Obasanjo is coming against the backdrop of earlier alerts by some leaders, especially those of the opposition, of deliberate and orchestrated attempt to intimidate and frame them up.
“I wish to state without equivocation that President Obasanjo is a historical figure in Nigeria’s democracy and that the primary purpose of government is to provide security of lives and property of all citizens and residents irrespective of their status, political affiliation, religious inclination and ethnic leanings.
“Our nation has lost so much precious lives and property that we can no longer afford to travel that road again,” he said.
Atiku appealed to President Buhari to call the security agencies to order in order to douse the tension in the land.

There Is No Doubt That The APC Is Sick, Says Melaye

Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, says “there is no doubt” that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is sick.

Melaye said this on Friday evening when he appeared on Channels TV programme, Politics Today.

Melaye returned to the Senate from his ordeal at the hands of the Police and the courts in Abuja and Kogi State, to reject his designated seat as an APC senator in favour of one at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) corner, prompting insinuations he was on the verge of defecting to the erstwhile ruling party.

Asked on the programme on what platform he would be contesting to retain his seat in 2019, Melaye said: “When we get to that bridge, we shall cross it.

“Definitely I would be contesting on the platform of a political party, since the issue of independent candidature has not been signed by the President. But to tell you if it is APC or any other political party, for now I can’t say.”

Melaye was also asked if he had a problem with his party, to which he answered: “I don’t have a problem with my party but my party may have a problem with Nigerians, because of the way it is presently being run. I know the APC is sick… There is no doubt that the APC is sick.”

Offa robbery: Coalition of CSOs calls for Saraki’s resignation as SP

Vows to mobilize for impeachment if he fails deadline …Accuses Senate President of denigrating democracy with criminal conducts A coalition of some Civil Society Organizations in the country has demanded immediate resignation of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, following his links to the alleged Offa banks robbery and gang leaders’ confession, non declaration of his assets and the killings of over 33 people in Kwara State by political thugs. Saraki The group under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance and Democracy, which also recalled that Saraki’s corruption trial with the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, over his alleged non assets declaration was still ongoing in the anti-graft court, insisted that the path to honour for the Senate President was to step aside to clear his name. Addressing the media, Friday, in Abuja, Convener of the group, Alhaji Adamu Kabiru, who led other groups comprising labour unions, trade unions and Joint Action Committee, JAC, to the event, tasked members of the 8th Senate to do the needful by immediately impeaching Saraki as the Senate President should he fail to resign, saying such development would bring sanity and restore the lost glory to the upper chamber of the National Assembly in particular and Nigeria in general. The group which regretted that Nigeria has become a laughing stock in the international community because of the many corruption cases involving its number three man in government, accused the Senate President of seeking revenge against President Muhammadu Buhari and some appointees in the crime and anti-corruption agencies. It accused Saraki of leading the National Assembly to threaten President Buhari with impeachment following his latest problem with the Nigeria Police. The group also accused Saraki of being “desperate to get down with our country”, saying “it is imperative to take back our country using the only legitimate means of impeachment of Dr Saraki as the Senate President.” “For Dr Saraki to have threatened President Buhari with impeachment only because the police rightly invited him is the height of arrogance, and abuse of office and disrespect for the rule of law.

Professor Humphrey Nwosu's Account Of The Annulment Of The June 12 1993 Election

Humphrey Nwosu: My Greatest Regret is Inability to Declare Winner of June 12, 1993 Election
04 May 2014

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission between 1989 and 1993 is arguably, one of Nigeria’s brightest hopes in the field of political science. But the June 12, 1993 presidential election tried to cast a shadow over him. It was a poll that made international headline, not just for being about the best the country had seen at the time, but also for its annulment by its own architect, then military President Ibrahim Babangida, after one of the longest political transition programmes in history. Fifteen years after, on June 12, 2008, Nwosu launched a book, Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993 Presidential election and Its Annulment, in which he tried to explain the June 12 affair to a nation that was eager to know what went wrong. But the book tended to raise more questions than answers before a public that had already had its mind made up about those perceived to have helped to abort the June 12 hope. Six years on, and with another crucial election next year, Nwosu gives more insights into the June 12 subject, and talks about his regrets about the incident and how Nigeria can avoid similar political misfortunes in future, in this interview at his Enugu residence with Vincent Obia and Christopher Isiguzo. Excerpts:

You maintained a low profile after the 1993 election until your book was published in 2008. But the book tended to raise more questions than answers to the June 12 conundrum. Six years on, and ahead of another crucial election, are there things you feel you should have put in the book that you didn’t or things you added in the book that you shouldn’t have put there?

I’m not quite sure that many people have read the book from page one to the end. Sometimes, people choose to believe what they want to believe. Every aspect of the book explained what we did, especially the process that led to the June 12 election. You would recall that on the night of June 10, 1993, 9.30pm, Justice Ikpeme gave a decision that there should be no election. If you would recall, my broadcast, usually before any election is done, informing Nigerians about the election, what to do, what not to do, appealing that people should go and exercise their civic right, was on, when the Director of Legal Services, Mr. Buhari Bello, and his assistant, Tony Ojukwu, came to inform me that Justice Ikpeme’s court had ruled that there will be no election, they were disturbed. It was unusual for a court to sit in the night. At the time, this decision was given by the court all sensitive electoral materials had been distributed all over the country. My National Commissioners had gone into the field to supervise election. What could I do, without my National Commissioners? I tried to reach the president, I couldn’t. I tried to reach the then Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Akpamgbo, I couldn’t have access to him. What would a typical Nigerian do under the circumstance? But I felt the election must go ahead, but how would it be done, court had given a decision? I tried throughout the night to reach all the important political figures, I couldn’t. But the first thing I did the following day, June 11, was to seek audience with the Attorney General because he should represent NEC.

What transpired when you met Akpamgbo?

What really happened? I met him; in his house was the lawyer for ABN (Association for Better Nigeria). Recall that Barrister Umeadi was ABN’s lawyer. It was queer for a lawyer representing ABN to be in the residence of the Attorney General of the Federation. That struck me as strange; even though they might have known and I knew him, he saw me and entered one of the rooms; he said he would not want to have anything to do with NEC. Here was the AGF and I said, “What is happening, the court had ruled there would be no election tomorrow, meaning June 12.” He said, “No, there would be election.” He said, look, ABN coordinator is Nzeribe, he’s an Igbo man, he, Attorney General, Igbo man, Umeadi, Igbo man; and you chairman of NEC. He said no, go and relax, there would be a meeting of the National Defence and Security Council at 10 o’clock that same day and that they would overrule the decision of the court. Something in me said, would this kind of
